Our Barnyard Friends

Our animal friends are an important part of camp.  Caring for the animals allows campers to experience being needed- a new emotion for most.  The animals become teachers.  There are always new arrivals and greetings from old four legged friends. Campers experience the unconditional acceptance and joy of our animal friends.

Barnyard Babies

The barnyard is a good place to watch the miracle of new life unfold.  As we watch a new foal wobble in the pasture for the first time or an ewe with twin lambs, we see how delicate and beautiful we all are. Caring for all creatures, great and small, teaches us the meaning of community.

"Doc" is Grace's puppy.  He is a smart youngster full of puppy pep!  Judy is teaching him so he can work with the sheep.

A Friend Passes

By Judy Colby

5/10/04

This week a beloved friend passed.  Lassie, our aging collie, sought her final rest, somewhere here, known only to her and the spirits of others that have gone before her.

Lassie was nineteen this spring and has lived at Anderson Woods since she was three.  She was a faithful friend, camp mascot, companion to Rolf our stock dog, and lover of all animals, human, wild and domestic.

I think JOYFUL best describes Lassie.  My memory of her running with her nose deep in the snow like a plow last winter still brings a smile to my face.  Even at her age, it was her invitation, to me, to come play.

We know that her spirit will always be with us and we will remember her for the love that she offered to all who came to this sacred land.

Rest well my friend.  May you nourish the Earth that you have chosen for your final resting place.
